Im really shy, around girls especially...help?

I'm 16 and Im reaaallly shy and quiet, i have only a few close friends that i can really open up to and they say that im hilarious when im not being all shy. I dont have one friend thats a girl and hardly ever talk to girls in cl and when I do I always have short one word answers to their questions and i dont make eye contact with them. I'm always thinking about the right thing to say when I'm around girls and every time im about to say something i second guess it and stay quiet for fear of looking idiotic or embaring myself. Ive never had a gf or had any kind of interaction wih girls because of this. I think that I look pretty good when I wear nice clothes and gel my hair and whatnot, ive heard girls say that they think im hot at parties actualy but not to my face to one of their friends but they were drunk haha and ive had looks before when Ive gone out (which I rarely do) im nothing like really special but i think i can look ok so i dont think thats its my appearance thats keeping me from getting girls. i need some advice on how to improve my self confidence around girls especially and im also wondering if girls like shy guys like me. much appreciated.
