Is it best not to go and check to see what's happening when a firetruck goes by?

Whenever I see a firetruck or paramedic unit in my neighborhood, I really want to walk to it and see what's happening at the scene. Do the firemen (or firewomen) not like people standing and watching? Is it best just to leave them alone and let them do what they need to do?
