Afghanistan is Obama's Real War?
Iraq is strategically located in the oil rich middle east. From a national self interest point of view, the United States has far greater interest in a stable middle east especially with Iran saber rattling, the problem with Syria, Hamas and Hezbollah. Yet Obama repeatedly said during the campaign Afghanistan was the "real war". Granted, terror cells existed there but with limited power the US was able to neutralize the Taliban threat and run Bin Laden into a cave. Now Obama is increasing troop levels in Afghanistan. The Russians fought a bloody war there and lost. My question is, we have dealt with the primary terrorist threat in Afghanistan. Now we are putting advisers in and more troops. Other than terrorist Afghanistan holds no strategic value for the US. Is Obama now escalating the "wrong war". Will we be tied down in a quagmire just like the Russians? Does this look like another Vietnam? Is there an exit strategy? What is our long term goals? We are releasing terrorist from Gitmo on one hand and saying we need more troops to fight terror in Afghanistan on the other. Is this policy well thought out?
